These Aren’t The Ingredients You’re Looking For of the Day: Coca-Cola’s secret ingredients revealed?: This American Life claims that it stumbled upon the holy grail of secret recipes in a photo published alongside an article on Coke’s history in the February 18, 1979 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The photo allegedly features a hand-written copy of Coke inventor John Pemberton’s original recipe.

The formula, according to TAL, is as follows:

Fluid extract of Coca: 3 drams USP
Citric acid: 3 oz
Caffeine: 1 oz
Sugar: 30 (unclear quantity)
Water: 2.5 gal
Lime juice: 2 pints, 1 quart
Vanilla: 1 oz
Caramel: 1.5 oz or more for color

The secret 7X flavor (use 2 oz of flavor to 5 gals syrup):
Alcohol:  8 oz
Orange oil: 20 drops
Lemon oil: 30 drops
Nutmeg oil: 10 drops
Coriander: 5 drops
Neroli: 10 drops
Cinnamon: 10 drops

Coca-Cola Co. was quick to deny that its secrets have been spilled. “Many third parties, including ‘This American Life,’ have tried to crack our secret formula,” Coca-Cola spokeswoman Kerry Tressler told Reuters. “Try as they might, they’ve been unsuccessful because there is only one ‘Real Thing’.”

Whatever that means.

For what it’s worth, at least one ingredient is certainly incorrect: High-fructose corn syrup has long since replaced sugar as Coca-Cola’s exclusive sweetener.
