There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

I really don’t believe in abortion.

When asked “how about in cases of rape,” Bieber responded: “Um. Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason.”

At 24 years of age,” says a striking footnote on page one of the Army’s suicide report, “a Soldier, on average, has moved from home, family, and friends and resided in two other states; has traveled the world (deployed); been promoted four times; bought a car and wrecked it; married and had children; has had relationship and financial problems; seen death; is responsible for dozens of Soldiers; maintains millions of dollars’ worth of equipment; and gets paid less than $40,000 a year.

Brisenia Flores was gunned down at point-blank range in her own home in Flores, Arizona, as her terrified mother Gina Gonzalez, who had also been hit, played dead on the floor.

She sobbed as the court was told how she had heard Brisenia’s desperate pleas as her killer stood over her.

‘I can hear it happening,’ Mrs Flores told the court describing how her daughter said: ‘Why did you shoot my dad? Why did you shoot my mum?’

‘I can hear her telling him to “please don’t shoot me.”’

If there was ever something for the Mythbusters to Tackle!

These Aren’t The Ingredients You’re Looking For of the Day: Coca-Cola’s secret ingredients revealed?: This American Life claims that it stumbled upon the holy grail of secret recipes in a photo published alongside an article on Coke’s history in the February 18, 1979 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The photo allegedly features a hand-written copy of Coke inventor John Pemberton’s original recipe.

The formula, according to TAL, is as follows:

Fluid extract of Coca: 3 drams USP
Citric acid: 3 oz
Caffeine: 1 oz
Sugar: 30 (unclear quantity)
Water: 2.5 gal
Lime juice: 2 pints, 1 quart
Vanilla: 1 oz
Caramel: 1.5 oz or more for color

The secret 7X flavor (use 2 oz of flavor to 5 gals syrup):
Alcohol:  8 oz
Orange oil: 20 drops
Lemon oil: 30 drops
Nutmeg oil: 10 drops
Coriander: 5 drops
Neroli: 10 drops
Cinnamon: 10 drops

Coca-Cola Co. was quick to deny that its secrets have been spilled. “Many third parties, including ‘This American Life,’ have tried to crack our secret formula,” Coca-Cola spokeswoman Kerry Tressler told Reuters. “Try as they might, they’ve been unsuccessful because there is only one ‘Real Thing’.”

Whatever that means.

For what it’s worth, at least one ingredient is certainly incorrect: High-fructose corn syrup has long since replaced sugar as Coca-Cola’s exclusive sweetener.

The beauty of a new tool is that it allows you to see and approach your subjects differently. Using this phone brought me into little details that I would have missed otherwise. The image of the men resting together on a rusted bed frame could never have been made with my regular camera. They would have scattered the moment I raised my 5D with a big 24-70 lens attached. But with the phone, the men were very comfortable. They always laughed when they saw me shooting with it while professional cameras hung from my shoulders.
