Caterpillar, after record profits, squeezes its union for a six-year wage and pension freeze and increased insurance contributions – not because it has to, but because it can. As the machinists’ union enters its fourth month on strike, the company says it’s getting along just fine with temps and union workers who have crossed the picket line. Private-sector union membership is now at an all-time low of 6.9%. Even as calls to remedy America’s income inequality grow from Occupy and other movements, nobody in power is helping. The Democratic Party’s ship has long since sailed.

The Conservatives have also taken steps to ensure gang-related killings result automatically in a first-degree murder, while also singling out drive-by shootings and bolstering the fight against cross-border gun smuggling.

“We believe that our firearms legislation and the mandatory minimum prison sentences are having the desired impact,” Toews said.

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson also defended the government’s record on trying to rid the streets of smuggled handguns.

The Olympics is (are?) shit. Nothing more than a way for rich people to get richer on the backs of athletes who don’t get any money for it, most of whom aren’t photogenic enough or involved in popular enough sports to make any money on endorsements and the like. Add on top of that the fact that it’s an excuse for nationalistic flag waving bullshit and the horrible police repression that increasingly accompanies the Games (if you have protesty friends in Vancouver you know exactly what I mean) and it’s all a horrible mess that the world could do without. Build ‘em an island off the coast of Greece and let them shit all over that island and leave the rest of the world alone.
